Sendai Sushi

What's it like?

Kim and I should have learned from our first visit to Sendai. The allure of the all-you-can-eat buffet is undeniable, but you don’t have to try everything on the menu to get your money’s worth.

Our first visit to Sendai left us hurting (but in a good way). If you opt for the all-you-can-eat deal, which is $20 per person (and everyone at the table has to opt in, as well), you get three rounds to order in; you can order anything in each round, but you’re asked to eat what you order before moving on to the next series of dishes. We like to start off with a little miso soup and edamame; this time the miso wasn’t great, but the soy beans were nice and buttery.

When it comes to sushi, I find that there are a few staple ingredients that get repeated in most of the rolls we try—salmon or tuna, and avocado, namely. We tried at least six different rolls on this visit, along with tempura veggies, and green tea ice cream. My favorite part of the meal, though, might have been the tempura banana…no, really, it’s delicious.

The irony of our experiences at Sendai is that despite a reluctance to eat sushi at any restaurant (I won't even go before hearing several positive recommendations), I gorge myself on Sendai's buffet. Rather than stopping when we were full this time, Kim and I continued to eat until it hurt, again.

As for ambiance and service, the restaurant is clean, but a bit outdated (my emphasis, though, in on the cleanliness, as I wouldn’t trust anything less in a sushi restaurant). The staff and sushi chefs are all extremely friendly, and kept a smile on even as we took advantage of the dinner deal and stuffed our faces.
