Pismo's Coastal Grill

What's it like?

Tonight I dined at the new Pismo's Coastal Grill which is located at Blackstone & Nees.  First impressions of the restaurant were that the location is good, the design of the space takes on a coastal theme and frankly the detail put into the theme of the restaurant were very well thought out.   We had to wait about 25 minutes before getting a table which is nothing new for a new restaurant in the Fresno area.  We took time to wait at the Bar which is right at the entrance of Pismo's.  They feature a full bar with about 8 beers on tap.

Once we got a table I thought the service was fair but not excellent.  The servers seem to still be learning the menu and were friendly.  I  ordered the Mahi Mahi Grilled Sandwich which was $10.99.  This option came with a choice of fries or cole slaw.  Overall I thought the sandwich was average.  I felt that the fish was really underscored by the amount of fixings they put on the sandwich.  I think the fish would have been better had I ordered it by itself.  I likely would have ordered the Mahi Mahi dish had it not been over $21.00. While the sandwich was average in my opinion, the french fries were actually pretty good!

A few notes on their menu:

Sandwiches range from $10-$14 approx

Dinner Salads range from $13-$16 approx

Main Dishes range from $21-$30 approx

Pismo's Coastal Grill was  good experience but I would not give it a strong recommendation.  It was a bit more expensive than I thought it would be also.

That does seem pricey, even for river park. Maybe when I first saw this place I thought it would be more "long john silvers" and less fine dining. With those prices I would expect a higher quality that what you've mentioned.

I have been part of opening new resteraunts in the past (as a part of the wait staff) so I know all about the unfamiliarity with the menu, etc....I expect that will get better with time.

angie foodmuse  |  Fri, 2009-11-06 08:43 was the clam chowder? Can't go to Pismo without having clam chowder from the line up of eateries there! My husband thinks they just have a big tank underground and pump clam chowder to all of them.

Thanks for the early review. Anyone have clam chowder there yet?

I had a similar experience. I plan on going back to sample some of the appetizers and clam chowder though. I am hoping it's just the initial opening flusters they are experiencing.

We had an overall good experience. I thought the clam chowder was a little thin and it had a grainy consistency. My wife ordered the combo louie salad and could not finish all the crab and shrimp they gave her. I ate the rest and it was delicious. I had blackened Mahi and it was cooked perfectly. I thought the portion was a little skimpy but it was tasty. We will be going back

My gosh, is anyone ever happy about anything. The dinner that I had was good which was fish and chips. I did have a bowl of clam chowder which I found to be excellent. I felt the staff was great too. In fact, I am having lunch there today to see how that goes.
