Mark of Excellence

What's it like?

I opted to forgo Mickey D's and see what Mark of Excellence was all about. It was quaint. You order from the menu that is written on their chalkboard wall which I liked – gave it a diner feel. The place is really super clean – even the bathroom which has this great laundry room sink – you know those big plastic ones you used to have in your house as a kid…was that only me? Oh well, I digress. The place was cute. They had a tv on the counter – turned to Jerry Springer’s Stripper Edition. About halfway through my meal, he asked us if we wanted him to change it to the news – we of course said no – so he turned up the volume. :) Who doesn’t love a little bit of Springer with their meal?

The man who took my order was really nice and the other two guys at the bar recommended the Pida Burger. They order the bread from the Hye Quality Bakery which I have to say was a-mazing and from now on I will only use those for homemade burgers no more of those grocery-store-bought-pieces-of-tiny-stale-bread-circles. Of course I had to add bacon…mmm…bacon. The bacon was good. Not Sunnyside Deli good, but better than I can make at home good (and not too crisp, just crisp enough with enough fat).

The burger came with a choice of sides: chips, potato salad, fruit or rice pilaf. I of course choose the potato salad. A good choice on my part because it was the perfect temperature and tasted like homemade (I didn’t want to ask if it actually was and break the spell – so in my mind, its homemade). The burger was good, not great, but good. It reminded me of a backyard hamburger that you ate at a friend’s house during the summer. Good, but not amazing. It satisfied the craving and I would much rather go there than to Austin’s.

I plan to try their BLT and tri-tip later on – I am waiting for that take-your-breath-away meal. They also have breakfast burritos which will be first on my list of items to try. All-in-all it was a good experience. Not amazing, not terrible. Room for improvement – I just hope it lasts long enough to give it a go.
